Is it true? Are you the talented one? "Yes," he says emphatically, smiling and nodding slowly. And, modest. "Yes," he continues. "That, too." Shannon "plays drums" he says. "I do. I play drums." I roll my eyes trying to think of ways to draw the truth out of him. Isnt it true that youre actually the mastermind behind everything? "Me? No. Im not the mastermind. I play drums," he say with a diabolical smile. Shannon also like techno. Ah. Now theres a topic upon which he might elaborate. Whats up with you and the techno? "Oh, man. Im really busy." I make a face. "No, really. 30 Seconds to Mars keeps me really busy." I sigh deeply. Are we going to see you in a film? "Movies? I play drums. Im busy." I make a screwface. He laughs reluctantly. "Id love to do a lot of things, but Im working, you know? Im blessed to have this much work to do. Its a dream come true. 2013 / JEHAN.COM y9uSyICrtow,qF3XfAvX4kc
Catalano. "Oh, yeah," he says with a well-worn laugh, "right." Is that really what everyone remembers? That might have been true before February 2014. "Whats true for you?" he asks. Whats true for me is that Catalano won an Academy Award. Best Supporting Actor. "Yeah, I know," he smiles. "Isnt that something?" he asks as I silently ponder the significance of that event for what else could happen in a world we believed we understood. Jared Letos made a lot of films. How many of them do you remember? "Me? I remember all of them," Jared says. I've seen several of Jared's films, but the one that I remember is Mr. Nobody. "You're the only person that's seen that film," he smiles. Something about a guy named "Nemo" who marries three women. An emotionally unstable blonde mired in memories of the past; a proper, respectable Asian whom he does not love; and the other one? Well, I can say this much. When he found himself and his car submerged in the lake after sailing off a cliff during his drive at the end of the day to their marital home, "Nemo" tried his best to overcome those circumstances. With choices like "Mr. Nobody", it seems like a mystery that Catalano persists in the cultural memory. "It's just one of those things, you know? I'm okay with it. It's almost as though people know me, but they've forgotten how they came to know me," he muses. Until now. "Right," he agrees. Jared Leto / Shannon Leto / Constance Leto 2014 Academy Awards It's not so much that the Academy Award was a big surprise. It's the where have you been factor. "Well, I hadn't made a film that anyone had seen for such a long time." But, that's not to say that he hasn't been busy. "I've been on tour, literally, for years. We've been touring the world for what seems like forever." "We" is 30 Seconds to Mars. A three-piece rock band consisting of Jared, his brother Shannon Leto and Tomo Milicevic. If you have not had the pleasure, their concert footage is worth having a look-see on YouTube.com. It's about the fans, the multitudes of whom are referred to as "The Echelon". "Yeah, we have a pretty dedicated family of people who love and support us." That could very well be the minimalist statement of our time. Face paint. Merch. Languages. "That's true, actually. Much of our audience is multi-lingual." What does that mean in the midst of the Academy Award, the arenas and Tomo Milicevic? "I don't know. You tell me." Jared's brother, Shannon Leto, plays drums. "Shannon is the talented one," Jared says. Classically trained Tomo Milicevic plays guitar. How'd Catalano manage that? "Tomo's been with us for a long time. Tomo is someone we love." Jared presents himself as relaxed and comfortable, very agreeable and cooperative, but I feel as though we are ever on the precipice of the answer to the real question: Where have you been all of this time? "What do you mean? I have been where I have always been. Working," he insists with laughter. Well, considering that we have all endured for so long from one visible incarnation of Jared Leto to the most recent visible incarnation of Jared Leto, the natural question would be: What are you doing now? "I have been climbing mountains, taking photos, meditating and enjoying life." Artistic endeavours? "I've been working on a film in Toronto." Is this a film that we are going to see? "Yeah. It's one of those sorts of films," he says. "2016". I ask him if this is a good thing--being in one of "those sorts of films". "It's an opportunity to do something different than what I usually do. It's an experience." An experience. That's how Jared describes a starring role in a DC Comics production of monumental summer movie opening proportions. "It's a new fanbase, that's very true." Merchandising. Possibly a new franchise. "Very true." A very different sort of life and career than an actor of "art house" films. I ask him if he's ready for the fans camping outside of his home. "I am usually on tour. It's rare that I am at home." Rock star. Academy Award winner. And, fame doesn't bother him because hes usually on tour. "Does that make me sound like an asshole?" he asks. I ask him if we can look forward to a My So-Called Life reunion. "I don't know," he says. "Do you know something?" The humour of that is pretty spectacular because it's obvious that whether anyone knows anything at all is a genuine question because Catalano won an Academy Award. "Is it really that weird?" Jared asks. I stare at him with round eyes. He says, "Umm, okay." 2013 / JEHAN.COM 9xvF4oMEkls,VBIGcikdwVU,ZlaLc-4E4YA,sk3tCB6D9no,ZBzdVGGgxZ8,qF3XfAvX4kc
I asked him the question that is on everyone's mind. How'd you get this job? "I auditioned." What? "Yeah, I auditioned. I was a fan and I had an opportunity to audition. So, I did," he says with an open-mouth smile, revealing his imperfect, wave-like line of teeth. What was that like? "I think it went okay," he says pensively. "Yeah, I think it worked out." Well, I'd believe that as true. Tomo's tenure with 30 Seconds to Mars began in January 2003. What's that been like for you? "It's amazing. People talk about dreams and having dreams fulfilled and honestly, it just doesn't adequately describe what it's really like. It's a dream. I'm living my dream. Every single day." And, the dream is...? "All of the... everything. The shows, the traveling, the fans, the music..." Tomo married his "cool chick", Vicki Bosanko, in July 2011. What's the dream and everything like as a married man? "Quieter," he says with a big laugh. "A lot calmer. Less weird." No more groupies? "We're not that sort of band," he says as he hesitates for a bit. "Well, maybe Shannon, but..." Really? "Did I say that? I didn't say that." Wow. 2013 / JEHAN.COM qF3XfAvX4kc

there is the song of sheaves of barley the pauper, his blessing to glean for there is such a thing as cold and famine so much of this thing I have seen there was such a time when I thought myself beautiful when I was loathe to eat when I stood near lamp posts pressed my body to walls lest the wind lift me off of my feet I believed beauty to be a great blessing something which I received something for which I could give thanks an invite to do more than eat there was that day when I saw them walking full and praising health it would seem to be true that being loved, eating food is the sole true form of wealth now I am as they standing and strong praying among the barley well on my feet these days, this famine I have eyes that see just an invite to do more than eat 2019 / NEED $ FOR FOOD / JEHAN SEMPER -7S_e-LGAFM,22X8U3fGZAQ,qF3XfAvX4kc

Those are the words of Jared Leto just a few years before his name became etched among the divinity of performers dedicated to the festival of Dionysus when he received an Academy Award for a history making performance. During my time in Hollywood, I have been privileged to speak with some wonderfully talented people. One such person, "John", managed to express the most amazing, astute expertise within the realm of filmmaking and the path to profiting from such efforts whilst clearly on drugs--a brain state which he is well practiced at managing. "John", his beautiful aesthetics and equally sweet nature mired in learned predator skills necessitated by the desert conditions of his life at the time we first made acquaintance, changed my perception of Hollywood, art and those investing their lives making films. The mere thought of his smile and softening gaze as I spoke to him inspires tears. After speaking with "John", I knew for certain that it is true. Just like Jared Leto, speaking at a time when his most recent film was years behind him, not knowing he would soon receive film's greatest honour, "John" once made films. I pray that "John" would return to film as well as Jared and with equal honour. Jared Leto with his Academy Award, Shannon Leto and mom, Constance Leto 2020 / JEHAN.COM 9xvF4oMEkls

"Happiness" is the ability to enjoy what Gd has written for us. Today is the first day of your life. Today is Yom Kippur. Today is the day that Gd seals your path during the next year of your life. Everything that happened previous? It's OK. On this day, Yom Kippur, you can live your life as though you have never made a mistake, never committed a sin, never done anything that was the least bit annoying, never done anything that you would prefer to forget, prefer that other people wouldn't remember. It's the first day. You are at the beginning. This first day, new beginning opportunity occurs every year on Yom Kippur. It's true. Well, it's true for Jews. Have you ever read one of those "choose your adventure" books? You know those books that you read a few chapters and then you're presented with a choice. The choice says, "Would you like to do this? Go to page... Would you like to do that? Go to page..." Have you read that sort of book? What I believe is most interesting about that sort of book is how the book handles the last choice. The last choice is the choice that leads to the end of the book. Once you've made the last choice, there are no other choices presented, no other paths to take. You simply read until you arrive at the end of the book. Everyone has had that sort of experience in their life, that realization that they have arrived at the last choice. The college student sitting quietly, a mountain of books on the desk in front of him, while he looks at his girlfriend preparing for yet another night of partying, enjoying the pleasure of just looking at her because he knows that they are on different paths. Some people realize that they have made the last choice after it occurs. The man who arrives at his home while his wife is packing the car and moving out, the very event that led to her decision the only thought in his mind. What is that event? Only he knows. At each Yom Kippur, we pray that Gd will seal the next year of our lives with joy and blessings that we would choose to have. However, the Book of Life is written by Gd. Knowing this to be true, we all pray, fast and do all that we believe would cajole, persuade and inspire Gd to write for us what we believe we would enjoy, because what Gd writes during Yom Kippur will be our life for the coming year. We pray and fast for what we would like to have, but Gd is the author of the Book. "Happiness" is the ability to enjoy what Gd has written for us. Having a life that we enjoy is directly related to our ability to enjoy the "choose your adventure" book after we have made the last choice, when we simply read until we arrive at the end of the book. What is the nature of the story of your life in light of the choices you have made, the "adventures" you have chosen? Do you like your life? Then ask Gd that your story continue with just as much joy as you have had and more. Would you prefer to have a different life? Then ask Gd to write a different story for you, one that you will love and enjoy. Gd continues writing joyful stories for people who like their lives and Gd writes new and different stories for people who would like to evolve to something better. Gd does this every year. It's true. Well, it's true for Jews. Who is a "Jew"? A Jew is someone that Gd loves. Believe that Gd loves you. Choose that adventure.

From the way in which you treat your spouse, how you speak to your children, the way you perform your job, the way you manage sorrow, the way you perceive the world and the way you perceive yourself , consider how your behaviour could inspire someone to evolve to something better . After 10 years of austerity and solitude, investing the majority of my time, literally, in the midst of a conversation with myself, I believe I know who I am. Well, that's sort of true. I believe that I know who I am within the scope of this particular life that I have as a human who believes their name to be Jehan. Who I am beyond the scope of this human life is a truth I am working on understanding. What I have managed to understand is that I am Jewish. I have always been Jewish. Most people would likely say, "How could you not know that you are Jewish? Wouldn't that be something that you would know?" Not necessarily. You would only know such a thing once you have an experience that gives you an opportunity to fully realize it. What was that experience? That's a topic for another day. However, the topic for today is: Living the truth of who you are. How do we do that? Well, first you would learn what it means to be who you are. In my experience, that is learning what it means to be Jewish. What are the practical acts, efforts and tasks of being Jewish? During the days since Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur I have kept kosher, studied Hebrew, started learning prayers, reciting prayers and studying the philosophical aspects of Jewish reasoning, thinking and decision making. These practices are actually very comfortable to implement, because I have so much experience. The most influential people in my life during my childhood and adolescence are Jewish. Every decision I have ever made in my life that lead to anything good is directly related to my internalizing and implementing the advice and wisdom provided to me by my Jewish mentors. At this time, as an adult, with the blessing of having lived 10 years as a Buddhist, immersed in austerity and solitude, I have achieved the required level of peace and acceptance of myself that gives me the mind and heart to accept and live in truth. The theme of my childhood and adolescence would be accurately stated as, "To whom much is given, much is required". This is literally true. Confirming that life is truly filled with humour, this quote from the New Testament was very prominently featured in the decor of Phillipa Schuyler, School for the Gifted and Talented, which I attended for middle school. From the first day I attended Phillipa Schuyler, this quote was reiterated to me ad infinitum. The constant reiterating of this quote continued while I attended Stuyvesant High School where in the midst of my persistent truancy, my teacher, Ms. Lichtenstein, shouted in frustration, "You're wasting that brain of yours." As I made my way through my first years at college and became an adult, I always believed it to be a strange truth that this quote has continued its ubiquitous placement in my life and thoughts. During many of these years since middle school, the very idea that somehow I am required to do more, to achieve more, to be better than others is an idea whose influence I truly refused to allow to affect me. I resolved that I would simply live my life, choosing to do what I would like on the basis of what would be most enjoyable and interesting in my sole opinion . I resolved that I would not allow a series of words painted on the wall of a middle school to influence what I would choose to do , nor would I allow it to decide how well I would choose to do it . As I started observing my first kosher Rosh Hashanah and during the days leading to Yom Kippur, I invested much of my time pondering what would be the true and practical meaning of living my life as a Jewish person. What would I achieve by "professing" that I am Jewish that I would not achieve by simply continuing to apply the advice and wisdom I have received and continuing to observe the commandments provided in the Torah? How truly interesting and joyous it is to learn, after all of these years, that the very idea that somehow it is my path in this life to utilize this "brain of mine" to do more, to achieve more, to be better, to inspire fellow humans--an idea that I have refused to accept for many years--is precisely what it means to be Jewish. What is the meaning of being Jewish? The practical effect of being Jewish is that I have a responsibility. I have a responsibility to live a life that has the potential to inspire my fellow humans to evolve to something better. I have a responsibility to utilize my life to assist others in achieving their goals and living a life that honours the blessing of having been born in this world as a human. The practical result of living up to this responsibility is the very path to achieving the goal of Judaism, which is translated as making certain that all is right with the world. This goal can only be achieved when the commandments are observed, the wisdom is practiced and Jewish identity is professed. Many people would say, "Well, shouldn't we all behave at a level that would inspire fellow humans?" Yes. Living a life with the potential to inspire humans to elevate themselves to something better is something that everyone should do. However, for Jewish people, living a life with the potential to inspire is a task that we must do, because it is the very meaning of what it is to be Jewish. The work that we have been blessed to do in this world, the work that provides the opportunity to inspire, is comprised of, literally, every sort of task, effort, objective and activity that exists within the world. Every activity, every task, however mundane and modest it may seem, is an opportunity to inspire. From the way in which you treat your spouse, how you speak to your children, the way you perform your job, the way you manage sorrow, to the way you perceive the world and the way you perceive yourself, consider how your behaviour could inspire someone to evolve to something better. 2018 / Jehan Semper Do you like your life? Considering the nature of my existence as the Gd of practically everything, I have a lot of thoughts about Ra and the events in the Stargate story. To meditate the events in the Stargate story, we ought to establish the facts of what actually occurred within the story. 1. Ra traveled to Earth. 2. A young, male human approached a bright light. 3. Ra possessed the young, male human. 4. Ra established himself as the ruler of Earth. 5. Ra gathered some of the humans, transported them to a similar planet to mine the mineral he utilizes to extend the life and health of the young, male human body as well as other purposes. 6. The humans on Earth staged an uprising and buried Earth's stargate. 7. Ra and his workers continued living on the similar planet for at least 1,000 years. 8. Humans on Earth located the buried stargate and assembled it. 9. Humans on Earth sent the translator and military team to "explore" what was on the other side of the stargate. 10. The military team leader brought a nuclear weapon with him for the purpose of destroying what was on the other side of the stargate. 11. Ra decided to send the bomb back to Earth with the mineral to destroy the humans on Earth. 12. Ra altered the nuclear weapon in such a way that its timer could not be deactivated. 13. The military team killed Ra's servant before he sent the bomb back to Earth. 14. Seeing that the nuclear weapon's timer was activated and could not be deactivated, the military team transported the bomb to Ra's spacecraft. 15. The nuclear weapon detonated before Ra could deactivate the timer or transport it elsewhere. There are a lot of events, relationships, dialogue and motives that we could talk about, but what's most important is what happened immediately prior to the bomb detonating, destroying Ra's spacecraft and killing Ra. What do we know about the actions of the characters? Ra 1. Ra lived on that similar planet for more than 1,000 years during which he had never aggressed upon anyone. 2. The only motive we know is attributable to Ra is that he possessed a young, male human body because he wanted to continue living. 3. The mineral made it possible for him to continue living. Thus, he gathered workers to mine the mineral. 4. The workers lived within what the story described as a healthy community of families and many children. 5. When Ra first learned of the arrival of the translator, military team and nuclear weapon, he had the translator and leader of the military team brought before him to ask them if they were there to harm him. 6. During that first conversation, he revealed his true form, a young, male human with no adornments or beautification other than what was customary for young children in the care of their parents: kohl around his eyes. The Military 1. After killing Ra's servant, they tried to deactivate the bomb's timer, but they didn't know how to do so and the timer was nearing detonation. 2. The military team transported the nuclear weapon to Ra's spacecraft because that was the only method of ridding themselves of the nuclear weapon quickly. A calm conversation made more pleasant with tea and other refreshments could have solved this problem. This is what I believe would have been said: Ra: I've been living here peacefully for more than 1,000 years. What's the reason that you want to kill me? Military: We don't really want to kill you, really. We're afraid of you. Translator: Maybe it's not such a good idea that you have these people working for you like this, you know? Ra: I'm not interested in destroying your civilization. I just want to keep living. That's the reason I came here. That's the reason I have these people mining this mineral. I don't want to die. Translator: Well, maybe they don't want to work for you. Military: Listen, as long as you don't want to hurt the people on Earth, I've done my job. Ra: Just close the stargate. That will give you certainty about Earth's safety. Translator: These people don't want to live as slaves. Ra: I take good care of them. Translator: They don't like the slavery thing. Ra: I need that mineral. Here's an idea. They continue mining the mineral and I can help improve their lives, live longer lives, healthier lives. Translator: How much of that mineral do you really need? As lovely as that would have been, I do understand that the story we saw in the theatrical has a greater purpose than "entertainment". I believe that what I understand about the theatrical's story is: Being older, wiser and having access to more knowledge, better technology and what could be perceived as every advantage, does not necessarily equal victory. Sometimes, victory is a matter of circumstance or what some people would describe as fate. There are many examples in human history of the great being bested by the most unlikely of opponents and even children, such as the story of David and Goliath. As I ponder and meditate upon the images, stories and events I perceive during my time in this world, I think of Biblical and Norse mythology, the valkyrie shepherding its chosen from the warriors on the battlefield, the words of Adonai describing events before they have occurred. Ra traveled to Earth looking for a way to continue living. He succeeded. He lived more than 1,000 years longer than he would have. Peace be upon him. May the one true Gd be greatly pleased with him. ZlaLc-4E4YA,3RLwuDQSkDI,sk3tCB6D9no THE KILL performed by JEHAN SEMPER Lyrics and music by JARED LETO During 2011, Jared Leto directed a short film titled "Hurricane" inspired by a song of the same name by Thirty Seconds to Mars on their fourth studio album titled "This is War". Much of "Hurricane" is filmed on location in New York City with Jared performing as the lead character within a surreal "dreamscape" alive with archetypal imagery and introspective narrative. The only artwork more interesting than "Hurricane" is the "The Making of Hurricane", which provides an amazing opportunity to see the mundane details and truth of filmmaking. Not long after the filming of "Hurricane", Occupy Wall Street became the greatest human spectacle in the world until that time. Those interested and actively involved in the Occupy Wall Street effort would meet to speak, express and solve problems at a donated space located on Walker Street near Broadway, which is near many of the filming locations chosen by Jared and his team. Chambers St, Brooklyn Bridge City Hall, the many side streets of Tribeca and Walker St have become so loved and well remembered within my heart from the years that I made my home in New York City. I learned of Jared's art after Occupy Wall Street. I believe, it is worth saying, that "The Kill" is deeply relevant and iconic of the experiences, thoughts, feelings and ideology within my perception of the people I knew and the events that occurred during Occupy Wall Street. So much so, I am inspired to sing this song. Is there anything in this world that you would be unwilling to live without? Food, clothing and shelter. Love and art. Filmed in New York City during Summer 2017, "Orca: A True Story" director and star, Jehan Semper, former IT worker and Occupy Wall Street protester, allows the audience to share her true life experience as one woman extricating herself from the odyssey of being a homeless street beggar in Downtown Manhattan during the six years since the Occupy Wall Street spectacle at Zuccotti Park. Would you fall in love with a homeless person? Newly released on Amazon, documentary feature film, "Orca: A True Story", aims to answer this very question. Jehan says, "Orca: A True Story is different than other films about the homeless because the story is about a real person and her experiences. One of which, is the experience of being homeless." Jehan works to accomplish her goal of returning to "a normal life", after six years of sleeping on sidewalks and in doorways, by saving money she receives from passersby who respond to her cardboard sign that reads "Need $ for FOOD!" as she sits silently. As though the task of returning to "a normal life" as an employable member of society with a job and a home isn't challenging enough, as she nears the goal, she decides that she would like to get married. Thus, she starts interacting with passersby that are kind to her as though they are speed dating. And as though she wasn't busy with that, Jehan thought it would be a great idea to make a film about that process and that's exactly what she did--with a smartphone. "When I decided to make the film, I just thought, 'What do you need to make a movie? You need a camera and you need people. I have a camera in my smartphone and I have people who are willing to sit and talk with me,' so I just did it." Jehan's perception of the relationships built with her "speed dates" and the people who befriended her as she sat at the corner of Trinity Pl & Rector St in Downtown Manhattan, is the heart of the film.
